Hope McGill

Tell us about your newest work and what inspired you to write it.
Pearls is a quickly paced fast read. The main character Victor Scott a successful thoroughbred is completely smitten by his voluptuous neighbor. He discovers her by accident late one while looking through his bedroom window.

Tell us about yourself.
I am a mom of a 16 year son. I have 5 brothers and 4 sisters. I am very family oriented. When I am not writing I enjoy vacationing, listening to great music and painting.

Is there a general theme present in your work? If so, what is it?
I don’t think there is a general theme.
Who would you say is your target audience?
Definitely the grown and sexy audience. This book is very erotic and not for the faint at heart.

What do you hope to accomplish with your writing?
I really want to push the importance of having plus size characters, characters with flaws, black women of all shades and sizes. We come in some many different variations I think the literacy world is ready to see characters that are perfectly imperfect.

What is one thing you wish you had known about this industry that would have made your journey easier?
I definitely wish I had more knowledge and experience. It’s hard starting out because there are so many sharks. So many con’s going on you don’t really know who to trust.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Please do your research!!

If there was one message you could get across to your readers from your most recent book, what would it be?
I would tell them that I write for the people who are ready to see characters in all shapes and sizes. Characters who have flaws emotionally and physically. Characters that you will laugh, cry and grow with.

What is your next book project? When can we expect it?
I am currently working on two projects Pearls part 2…The Rocky Oliver Story and Also Heavy Artillery. Both will be released this fall. No exact date as of yet.

Tell me something random about yourself.
Music is my second love. I love all different types of music.

How do you handle negative reviews? Is it ever okay for an Author to lash out at readers for a unflattering review?
These books are our babies so of course it hurts when someone leaves a negative review. I personally have never lashed out at anyone. I try to take it as a learning lesson and focus on making the next project even more successful. I am a complete believer of treating people the way they want to be treated. I am very professional, so far I have not had any unprofessional experiences. Everyone is not going to like what you put out. We have to be able to take a bad review on the chin and keep it moving.

Who is your biggest writing influence and why?
J. California Cooper hands down. (May she rest in peace). She was so wise and so down to earth. She was also very visual and descriptive. She made you see the blue clouds and smell the old barns, feel the texture of the hay. Each one of her books taught me a lesson about life. I loved her for that!

If you could have a conversation with your younger self, what would you say and why?
I would tell myself to slow down, enjoy the moment, cherish yourself, value yourself and trust your gut.
